WordPress themes are not much complicated if you have the knowledge of the framework. I have never written a theme, but have ported many form my own use. Even this theme is the default WordPress theme twentyten which I have ported and even created a BBPress theme for twentyten. The real reason I have never got into creating my own themes is that I know that I am not good in graphics. I had even ported the P2 Theme when it had just released and added option to add title, insert image, video, etc.

I have used Google Fonts for the front page of this theme and the home page in Magazine style.
If you are interested in writing your own theme, check out the documentation at WordPress, which should give you a fair idea. The difference between writing a new theme and porting a theme is in the first case, you write from scratch and the later, you modify the style of the theme which I have done for this blog. Now there are theme framework available which is good if you are not able to write a theme from scratch. You can drive child themes in case of Genesis and for thesis, you can write custom style sheets and functions to design your theme.
